No matter what you're planting.... it's GROWING!
This past November, I went to a Gratitude Conference with the
Greater Good Science Center in San Fransisco.
My daughter came with me so we could have a girl's trip vacation.
While we were there, we decided to go to the majestic redwood forest of Muir Woods. I have never been quite so awe struck (as to how small we are in comparison to nature) as I was standing in the middle of those woods. I've been to the ocean many times, climbed the Leaning Tower of Pisa, bathed in the mud of a volcano, and sat at the VERY top of the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, but.... something about those huge trees took me by surprise.
Your mind is a garden,
Your thoughts are seeds
You can grow flowers, or
You can grow weeds.
That poem resonated with me the first time I read it, but I don't think I fully grasped its true meaning until I sat there in that forest looking at the peaceful enormity of those incredible trees. They were MASSIVE... yet (like every living thing), they started their journey as just a tiny seed.
Learning to plant seeds of GRATITUDE into your life is like planting happiness within the soil of your mind. AND just like a real garden.....
IT WON'T grow in a single day. But I can promise,
"you will reap that which you sow".
You are the farmer of your MIND.... What are you Planting?
Learning to practice GRATITUDE is the single most life changing thing I have ever done. It isn't always easy, and I can truthfully say, I still have a moment every now and then where I catch myself complaining, but during my quest to learn and study the brain, I am now more convinced than ever that our thoughts are the KEY to our attitude.
"As a man thinketh in his heart.... so is HE. "
Gratitude (in some form) has been a part of almost every civilization and religion in human existence. Cicero, the great public speaker of the early Roman Empire, translated Ancient Greek writings to say "Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others."
Dr. Robert Emmons, notably the world's leading expert in scientific GRATITUDE, (omg..... I heard him speak at the San Fransisco conference, and totally stalked him backstage like a rock concert to meet him) has done hundreds of research studies on gratitude for The University of California, Davis says that "Gratitude has one of the strongest links to mental health & satisfaction with life of any personality trait."
His book, Gratitude Works! , was one of the first ones I read along this brain journey, and I reread it often. I would highly recommend it, and can tell you first hand that (the easy to read) information within its pages are life changing.

May you take a moment today and look at the seeds you're planting. Create the right growing conditions in your mind to let GRATITUDE bloom... and before you know it you will have little sprouts of joy growing into mighty trees.
