Aristotle said "You are what you repeatedly do."
but..... what if you aren't aware that what you're doing is harmful?
The truth is.... Your BRAIN is working at all times,
and every thought you have (whether spoken or NOT)
is traveling through your mind and firing the neurons in your brain.
SO.... ask yourself this question.....
WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT ?
I've heard little quotes like "You are what you think about" and "Thoughts become things"
a million times in the past.... BUT last year I went to an EEG workshop with
Dr. Ido Davidesco, a Ph.D. research scientist at NYU, and my life was drastically changed. I watched 1st hand, how
my THOUGHTS were
giving off a genuine, measurable, electronic signal registering on the screen in front of me...
which was transmitting messages within my BRAIN.
(photo above is me being hooked up to an EEG machine)
Here is a screenshot
of my BRAIN
(with my eyes closed)
just thinking .
So..... what does this have to do with YOU
and what does this have to do with GRATITUDE?
Let me tell you!
Every thought we think is transmitted in our BRAINS through something called a SYNAPTIC connection. Some of these synapses are electrical and some of them are chemical.
When you have a negative thought (even one about yourself)
the neurotransmitters in your brain are firing. Negative thoughts create stress, anxiety, frustration, depression, and sadness. Many of these signals are releasing a chemical called cortisol. The Mayo Clinic published a newsletter in 2016 stating Chronic stressful thoughts alter your immune system, suppress the digestive system, increase blood pressure and increase sugars into the bloodstream.
On the other hand.... GRATITUDE and mindful thoughts of thanksgiving do the exact opposite. Thoughts of GRATITUDE increase the blood flow and activity to the hypothalamus (which is the Master part of the hormone center of your Brain). Grateful thoughts increase our "feel-good" hormones like serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine.
These chemicals are linked to dozens of benefits to both our bodies and our minds.
Research shows the average person has about
50,000 thoughts per day, and approximately
60-80% of those thoughts are negative.
Most people have NO IDEA that their brains are
in a loop of habitual negativity. Think about the
little thoughts you have within your OWN HEAD
daily that are never even spoken aloud.
ALL OF THEM are releasing
synaptic signals in your Brain.
And..... ALL OF THEM
Even the little thoughts we keep to ourselves like:
1. omg... I have got to start working out- I'm so fat and out of shape
2. I canNOT stand this house another day
3. I swear if one more person calls me today, I'm gonna kill myself
4. No one is ever gonna love me... I am gonna die alone
5. I'll be working until the day I die because I can't save a penny
6. I hate this stupid job, but I need the money
The road rage and curse words we say to the cars that pull out in front of us
The thoughts we have about our "other" when they drive us crazy
The unspoken feelings we have when our children act less than lovely
The problem is..... We think these thoughts are HARMLESS.... and they're NOT!
Start TODAY....... and become more aware of ALL your thoughts... even those unspoken ones in your head.... and realize your brain is firing for each and every one of them.
IF you want to change your life..... You must first change your thoughts!
May you all start today being grateful for what you have instead of focusing on what you don't. Look in the mirror today and say "I am so grateful to be alive, and I will be happier in 2018 than I have ever been before!"
